Hands down, the CrossFit family we’ve gained. They are always there to celebrate your victories and encourage you through your challenges in and out of the gym.

When did you start CrossFit/how long have you been doing CrossFit for?
I think it’s been about 7 years, maybe a little longer.
How would you define CrossFit to someone interested in joining our CrossFit gym?
CrossFit will help you live a full life by improving your fitness as well as encouraging good nutrition and being healthy in general. There isn’t a better group of people to workout with. The community is amazing!
What do you like most about CrossFit?
That it challenges me every day. I leave a little better than when I arrived. All of those little improvements make a big difference over time.

I want to be heather this year than I was last year. I like to measure myself compared to my age group in the open and try to finish higher, percentage wise, than I did last year.

Typically 5AM. Sometimes a 4:30PM gets sprinkled in and I try to get in on the weekend and bring one or more of the girls.
What is a piece of advice you have for new members?

-I enjoy personal development. I’m always taking in a new book or listening to podcasts.
Julie and I like to travel.
-I like take the girls on adventures that range from taking the train into Chicago to visit the museums to skiing at Chestnut.
-I love CrossFit. I usually mix in a couple of 5ks a year and try to do a triathlon or two.

Where do you work?
I am an Account Executive for Shaw Media.
When did you start CrossFit/how long have you been doing CrossFit for?
I started CrossFit April 1, 2019 (8 months ago). I was encouraged by Kelli to give it a try and I can't thank her enough for introducing me to CrossFit.
How would you define CrossFit to someone interested in joining our CrossFit gym?
It’s a high intensity workout with varied movements of weightlifting, challenging and very rewarding. The workouts are always different, never repetitive and movements are scalable for every fitness level.
What do you like most about CrossFit?
The environment… the camaraderie and new found friendships. No one is degrading or judging each other, it’s a refreshing and authentic group of individuals. There’s no better feeling when your struggling to push weight overhead and you hear someone yell “You Can Do It!”
What is a goal you have for yourself?
To concentrate on my form, increase strength and to be able to move through all the movements proficiently!
What class time do you attend?
I attend the 5:00 a.m. class. Love this group.
What is a piece of advice you have for new members?
My advice for a new member is to move at your own fitness level, commit and set goals. Do not compare yourself to others, everyone’s fitness level is different.
What are your hobbies?
CrossFit, yoga and hiking.
How has CrossFit made a positive change in your life?
I was a runner most of my life and have attended varied workout classes over the years. I was becoming bored with my workout routine and I would talk myself in and out of going for a run or going to the gym…… working out was becoming a chore.
As crazy as it sounds, I look forward to my alarm going off at 4:00 a.m. to attend a WOD. CrossFit has been life changing for me over the past 8 months, not only has it improved my overall strength and fitness, there have been mental gains as well. The mental toughness to push through challenging moves is very rewarding.
My husband wishes I could go one day without mentioning CrossFit….. I have not yet been able to honor his wish.

My husband is Bryce Griswold and we have two kids, Emersyn (2 years old) and Boyd (will be 6 in January)!
Where do you work?
I am a kindergarten teacher at Bluff Elementary!
When did you start CrossFit/how long have you been doing CrossFit for?
I have always been physically active and have been very competitive my whole life. I have been running "races" since I was in college and did bootcamp classes at the YWCA before starting CrossFit. I honestly do not remember exactly when I started, but Bryce started first and talked me into going to the bootcamp classes at Kings & Queens CrossFit, I believe in the spring of 2013. I then found out I was pregnant with Boyd shortly after and continued to do bootcamp classes and a few CrossFit classes each week. I started to really get into CrossFit after Boyd was born in the Spring of 2014. However, in the last 2-3 years I finally believed in myself that I could be better and stronger and that is when I really took CrossFit more seriously.
How would you define CrossFit to someone interested in joining our CrossFit gym?
Crossfit workouts are always different, able to be adapted to any fitness level, and empowering. Crossfit is not only an EXCELLENT exercise program, but it connects you with people who have common interests as you and has become my "me time" that I really look forward to because of those people.
What do you like most about CrossFit?
I love the atmosphere, the feeling of accomplishment/empowerment, and the people at our gym!
What is a goal you have for yourself? I would like to continue to work on my food choices. Anyone that knows me, knows that I LOVE all things food. One of my favorite parts of life is all sweets, but I am working hard to count my macros and find a better balance.
What class time do you attend?
5 AM is the BEST!!
What is a piece of advice you have for new members?
It IS hard at first, it is hard still many days for me, but the addiction gets me there!! I hope that you catch the "addiction" bug and stay with it! You will not regret it.
What are your hobbies?
(1) Going on mini adventures with my husband and kids (trips to Iowa football games, a night away at a hotel, summer day trips, bowling, trampoline park). (2) I enjoy running 5ks, 10ks, and 1/2 marathons with my dad and my sister. (3) I like finding a good TV show to binge watch (currently "A Million Little Things").
How has CrossFit made a positive change in your life?
Bryce and I are not originally from the Clinton area. Our hometown is two hours from Clinton and when we moved here 10 years ago we did not know anyone. Now, most of our friends are truly our gym friends and without the connections that we have made at the CrossFit gym over the years we may not have stayed in Clinton. The crossfit gym gave Bryce and I a common interest, something to do together, and friends that have become our family. Thank you to everyone who has embraced us and helped us through the years! We are lucky to have a home at Crossfit Free Spirit.

I work at Mentor Clinton County, I bartend at Manning's Whistle Stop, and I do Direct Support work with a girl who has autism!
When did you start CrossFit/how long have you been doing CrossFit for?
I started CrossFit the summer of 2017 after graduating from college! I started by doing Boot camp classes at the old gym, then when we transitioned to the new gym is when I officially started CrossFit.
How would you define CrossFit to someone interested in joining our CrossFit gym?
CrossFit pushes you each and everyday. There might be days where you are discouraged by a workout, but don't let that stop you from attending. Use that as a teaching moment for what you need to work on to continue reaching your goals! Each person in the gym is at a different level, but that is what makes it so awesome. I always tell people that I will never be able to lift as heavy of weights as everyone else, but each day I go into the gym, I know I'm going to get a good workout in and am getting stronger. The coaches and other classmates are always pushing you and cheering you on!
What do you like most about CrossFit?
The friendships I have developed. I am at least 10 years younger than most of those that I attend class with, but have always felt welcomed and have so much fun with everyone! I always laugh when I tell my friends outside of the gym that some of my best friends are in their 40's. I like the social events that we plan for CrossFit! I think by having those events it has helped bring everyone at our gym closer together and helped form the "family" bond that we have!
What is a goal you have for yourself?
My goal is to attend classes 3-5 times a week and not let a movement in a workout (burpees, bike, or wallballs), keep me from attending a class... (Ooops). Another goal I have is overall to push myself more when it comes to lifting weights and step outside of my comfort zone when the weight seems easy.
What class time do you attend?
Usually 5:00am, but there are days I will attend 4:30pm class.
What is a piece of advice you have for new members?
Don't be discouraged after the first class! Keep coming back and you will fall in love!
What are your hobbies?
I like to hangout with family & friends, volunteer in the community, or just attend different events in the community. I am a social person who likes to be active!

Where do you work?
I work for a construction company in NM called Abrazo Homes as their Administrative Director. I have been with them 2 1/2 years and manage many things for them, but mostly their construction loan financing and some accounting. I work from home and fly back every couple of months to Albuquerque to touch base.
When did you start CrossFit/how long have you been doing CrossFit for?
I started CF in the Spring of 2010 after telling Barry for a while that there was, "No way in hell you are getting me to do that"! I said that a lot...and here I am today! I owe it all to Barry for getting me to actually walk into the gym:)
How would you define CrossFit to someone interested in joining our CrossFit gym?
CF has done so much for me not just physically, but mentally as well. I could go on FOREVER here on what I think CF is and how it could benefit someone that wanted to start their CF journey. I have had so many times where I have accomplished things that I never though possible! I was not athletic at all growing up so finding my "sport" in my 30's was not something I ever thought would happen. Because of CF, I have done a sprint triathlon, a full marathon, power lifting and weight lifting meets, and various CF competitions in NM and now in IL/IA.
What do you like most about CrossFit?
I like the social aspect of CF the best! The class environment along with the varied programming and coach led classes make CF something special. I am a social person and working out with a community of people that encourage and support you no matter what your abilities are, have gotten me to where I am today (and it has been quite the journey for sure). CF is in the gym and outside of the gym and I have made some of the greatest friends because of it! I love that I can be a part of the social committee and plan events:)
What is a goal you have for yourself?
My goal is to be more consistent and balanced with my diet. One of the things I have learned about CF is that when I eat better, I feel better, I look better, and my confidence goes up. This translates for me to a better performance in the gym. I would love to stay in the top 10-15% of female CF athletes in the age 40-45 category in the CF Open again this year.
What class time do you attend?
I attend mostly 8:30 am (with a few 4:30 pm classes here and there) and Saturday's at 9am. Coming 5 days a week is what I try and stick too. What is a piece of advice you have for new members?
My advice for new members...just walk through the door. Come and make it part of your routine. Don't be afraid to ask questions and don't ever feel like you are not "good enough" or are "not on someone's level". You workout for YOU and the more self confidence you gain, the better. It's OK to scale and do things to YOUR ability, not anyone else's. Dang, as I write that I need to remind myself that often too. The ego gets in the way a lot of times and we need to make smart decisions for ourselves:)
What are your hobbies?
My hobbies are CF of course:) I love spending time with Barry's family now that we live close to them after 17 years away! I like that I get to spend more time with my girls and attend their various activities. I am pretty OCD so a clean house and a balanced check book make me happy! Oh and I am not the best at it, but I did enjoy subbing on a kick ball team this summer and now playing sand volleyball this fall!
How has CrossFit made a positive change in your life?
CF has only done positive things for me. Looking back on my journey it has been one of ups and downs, but I wouldn't change a thing. My husband has always been my biggest supporter and I think everyone needs someone (or a group of people like at a CF gym) that gives them support they need to take that next step or push that much harder to obtain their goals. CF has brought me to tears and it has also brought me some of the greatest joy. It is learning to work through these emotions so you can achieve those physical goals. I want to be able to keep up with my girls when they are older and this is a way I can do that and I don't see myself stopping anytime soon.

When did you start CrossFit/how long have you been doing CrossFit for?
I started 5 or 6 years ago
How would you define CrossFit to someone interested in joining our CrossFit gym?
The difference between CrossFit and other alternatives is the support you get from other members and coaches. People at the gym are going to be supporting you and cheering you on the whole time. So many times I hear about CrossFit that 'the person who finishes last is cheered for the loudest' This is absolutely true (because I've been there many times lol!) It's not unusual to have a group of people encircling you and cheering you on to the finish during a workout - its an amazing experience. Also, the coaches will be at your side anytime you need them for help or guidance.
What do you like most about CrossFit?
I really like the community aspect. Before CrossFit I went to gyms where no one would talk or interact with each other. Everyone just walked around with headphones in doing there thing. When I started CrossFit and people were cheering me on during a WOD I couldn't believe it. I had never experienced that before at a gym. People would actually talk to each other and get to know each other after WOD's as well. I really enjoy our gym because of the special events that surround work outs (Holiday get togethers, Open activities, community projects, etc.)
What is a goal you have for yourself?
To improve my Olympic lifts and try to improve on my strength. I want to get a strict hand stand push up too!
What class time do you attend?
Usually 8:30 a.m. or 4:40 p.m.
What is a piece of advice you have for new members?
Make the decision to keep coming and stick with it. The workouts are tough at the beginning, they are for all of us. After some time of putting the work in you will see so many positive changes in your life, not just physically but also in your professional and personal life.
What are your hobbies?
CrossFit obviously. I also enjoy running and spending time with my family.
Wife Alicia, daughter McKenna, and son Konnor

How would you define CrossFit to someone interested in joining our CrossFit gym?
The difference between CrossFit and other alternatives is the support you get from other members and coaches. People at the gym are going to be supporting you and cheering you on the whole time. So many times I hear about CrossFit that 'the person who finishes last is cheered for the loudest' This is absolutely true (because I've been there many times lol!) It's not unusual to have a group of people encircling you and cheering you on to the finish during a workout - its an amazing experience. Also, the coaches will be at your side anytime you need them for help or guidance.

May 2013 for one month to build up my body and mind for a planned long-term hospitalization. September 2013

What do you like most about CrossFit?
Working out has never been as enjoyable as when performing a CrossFit WOD. The variety and group aspect of our
sport always fuel an amped anticipation and twisted joy in shared suffering that you just can’t get at your basic gym. I
like the programmed warmups, as they always activate my body leading up to the WOD. And I love that we have so
many great coaches!
What is a goal you have for yourself?
One near-term goal is beating my time from last year in the Quad Cities Triathlon this June. I’ve gone lighter on the
weight loads, but overall, CrossFit and yoga complement my triathlon training.
What class time do you attend?
I seem to perform best in the morning, so 8:30. Lately I’ve also been a regular at Hot Slow Flow Yoga, Mondays at
5:15 PM. I highly recommend it.
What is a piece of advice you have for new members?
Participate in the Open and a CrossFit team competition. These are great goals to work towards as you’re learning
the movements and are also a wonderful exposure to the CrossFit world beyond our box.
